German researchers: aesthetic leds could ease wrinkles

esthetic ledGerman researchers describe a potential alternative to botox and plastic surgery to ease the wrinkles of the face. Their study reports that the high intensity visible light of emitted by diodes (LED), applied daily during several weeks, succeeded in “a younger looking skin, reduced wrinkles, rejuvenated complexion and long-lasting resistance”.

The LEDs are miniature lights used in several products, such as the remote control of the TV or traffic lights.

In their research, Andrei P. Somer and Dan Zhu underline that the high intensity visible lighthas been used in medicine for more than 40 years to accelerate the cure of wounds. This light penetrates effectively into the skin, creating changes in subcutaneous tissues. Until this day, however, the scientists ignore the physico-chemical nature of these changes.

Their report determines how the visible light works: by changing the molecular structure of an adhesive layer of water on the elastin, the protein which confers its elasticity on the skin, the blood vessels, the heart and the other parts of the body. Figuratively, the light chases away these water molecules which are involved) in the immobilization of elastin, restoring gradually its elastic function and thus reducing the wrinkles of the face.

“We are to believe that our approach cannot be be easily converted in programs of deep physical rejuvenation”, declare the researchers.
